Lessons
-
Lessons are designed to be supportive, educational, and tailored to both horse and handler. Each session focuses on building clear communication, confidence, and mutual trust through positive reinforcement–based training methods.
All horses and handlers need to learn the basics of R+. You are both learning a new language and a new way to communicate with each other. Lessons may include groundwork, riding, or skill-specific exercises, depending on your needs and your horse’s experience. In the beginning, R+ is taught from the ground. Progress is guided at a pace that supports both the horse and the handler and long-term success rather than quick fixes.
Throughout each lesson, you will gain a deeper understanding of learning theory, timing, and reinforcement strategies, empowering you to continue training effectively outside of sessions. Questions are encouraged, and education is always a key part of the process—for both horse and human.
You can expect to learn:
the bridge signal
why timing is critical
default position
liberty leading
the “stay”
targeting
stationing
the reverse round pen
how to apply the above basics to the rest of your training.

Positive reinforcement is not a quick fix, but a thoughtful and effective approach that builds lasting understanding and trust. The time it takes for a horse to learn through positive reinforcement varies depending on the horse’s history, temperament, and prior training experiences, as well as the consistency of handling and practice. Many horses begin to show positive changes quickly as they learn how to engage with the training process, while more complex skills and long-term behavior change develop gradually over time. Progress is measured not just by completed behaviors, but by increased confidence, relaxation, and willingness to participate—outcomes that support sustainable learning and a strong partnership.

Positive reinforcement is most effective when learning is consistent and builds from one session to the next. Offering lessons in packages of six allows time for you and your horse to fully understand the training process, develop new skills, and gain confidence without unnecessary gaps between lessons. This continuity helps prevent confusion, supports steady progress, and creates a more relaxed learning experience for both horse and rider. A lesson package also allows goals to be set and adjusted over time, ensuring each session builds on the last and provides the best possible foundation for long-term success.

Food is an essential tool in positive reinforcement because it provides clear, timely feedback that horses naturally understand. When used correctly, food rewards increase motivation and reduce stress while helping horses make strong connections between their behavior and positive outcomes. Just as importantly, food manners are taught from the very beginning, ensuring horses learn to remain calm, respectful, and focused around treats. With clear structure and consistency, food-based reinforcement creates polite behavior, willing participation, and a trusting partnership between horse and handler. However, fading the food is always a goal in positive reinforcement.
